Check Yourself (Your Goals That Is)

Twenty years after graduation from Yale, 1953 graduates were surveyed about their success, goes the story from Zig Ziglar and Anthony Robbins.  3% if the graduates had earned more than the other 97% combined.  The difference?  The top achievers took the time to write down their goals and they took the time to look at them on a daily basis.  The specifics may vary slightly but that is the story as I remember it.  By reviewing their goals daily, this allowed the top 3% to maintain focus on their goals.  What does this mean to you and I?

The last few days, were a great example of why taking just a few minutes a day to review written goals is so important.  Earlier this year, I watched a video by Brian Tracy called the 10 Goal Method and took some time to apply his teachings.  I grabbed a pen and paper and wrote down what I wanted to accomplish.  Meaningful personal and professional goals were put on paper.  For the next 3 weeks, I was up early every morning to review what I had committed to paper.  I used my goals as a rudder to keep me on course and to effectively plan out my days and my weeks. The level of clarity of purpose that I felt was extraordinary.

However, last week happened.

To serve as a quick getaway, my wife, Erin and I took a few days out of town with some good friends.  It is pretty easy to guess the result, right?  I lost my rhythm and stopped taking the time to look over and review my goals daily.  My mind was elsewhere.  The trip was a blast but poor habits creeped back in.

There is nothing wrong with taking a few days off but the bad habits came home with me. I hit the snooze alarm, left my goals in my folder and went on about my days.  Ths fact was put in the back of my mind but I failed to do anything about it.  I could feel my self-esteem start to slip knowing that I had committed to something and didn’t follow through…I began to see myself as less worthy.  Just a few weeks ago, my goals were so important and now...I could barely remember what they were!

Lacking motivation to attack the upcoming week, Erin and I had a chance to talk things through.  She made me realize that I had stopped getting up early to review my goals and to map out my days.  Naturally, she was right.  So, I grabbed my goal sheet and re-charged by batteries.  Here I am, early Monday morning, typing this post I have a clearer focus and feel empowered.

Written goals, I've learned in this process, can be used as an effective tool to right the ship to remind myself of what's most important allowing me to take specific action.   My confidence has grown tremendously.  I deserve to hit my goals because I'm putting in the work.  Clarity is the name of the game.  I know exactly what it is that I want and am taking the steps to make them real.  When I didn't those precious few minutes daily, I wandered around throughout the day, got a few things done but didn't have the same sense of purpose.  Simple stuff.  Not necessarily easy but simple stuff.  When I make the CHOICE to review my goals daily I allow myself to become more focused and get more done.  My level of confidence has grown and I feel empowered to achieve.

Written goals are imerative to success.  When used properly they are a great tool to get back on track, to straighten out the rudder.  If you haven’t read the 10 Goal Method, Google "Ian Fitzpatrick 10 Goal Method" read it or re-read it, like I just did, to learn some goal setting basics.  Applying these principles will give you more power and control when working toward your objectives.
